Wind Energy Pros And Cons

Wind Energy Pros And Cons
Carol asks...

WHAT ARE 2 PROS AND CONS FOR COAL ENERGY AND WIND ENERGY?

i really need some help because my assignment is due tomorrow AND i cant seem to find anything about this on the internet so can you please help:)

WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS:

Well if I remember correctly from my environmental class.

Coal

Pros:

-Cheap source of energy

-Very abundant

Cons:

-Harsh on the environment, Big pollutant.

-Destroy lands due to coal mining.

Wind Energy

Pros:

-Renewable energy

-No pollutants

Cons:

-Expensive

-Can only be used in certain areas of the world where wind is sufficient enough to provide energy.

PUMPED STORAGE ENERGY USAGE PROS AND CONS?

Please in as much detail as possible, can anybody justify the usage of pumped storage ENERGY to supply the nations electrical needs as opposed to WIND power AND coal power usage?

WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS:

Since pumped storage is not an original energy generator, but an energy storage device, it is not reasonable to think of using it instead of wind or coal power. Rather, it is an ideal complement to both of those. Pumped storage can help a utility grid integrate variable and intermittent wind power, flexibly and rapidly responding to changes in wind output. Pumped storage can also help make coal plants operate more efficiently by absorbing output during off-peak periods when coal plants might otherwise ramp down and operate at minimum (and less efficient) levels. With the right design, a wind+pumped storage combination could replace or defer coal plant (or natural gas plant) operation altogether. Since pumped storage is not inexpensive to build, the environmental cost savings need should be included when determining whether the wind+storage approach is an option that is economically acceptable.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF WIND ENERGY?

There are alot of WIND farms going up in my area. The biggest con that I see from these generators is that they pollute the beauty of our mountain ridges here in Western Pennsylvania. Sure, I am all for ENERGY independence, but I think we rush to solutions in this country. What are your thoughts?

WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS:

There are three disadvanages:

1. You've already gotten one -- they detract from the beauty of the countryside.

2. They're very expensive to build. The average turbine will not pay for itself for 15 years.

3. They're not efficient, and therefore can never account for more than a few percentage points of the energy we need.

All told, they look "green," and for that reason, a lot of people feel good about them. But really, they're just not practical.

Cheers.

Pros:

Provides energy on demand, which can be used to smooth out the demand peaks. Steam stations take some time to change the production level. This is about the base load and peak load planning and production.

Few storage alternatives in current systems.

Could be a possibility to use "non continuous" alternative energy systems for pumping, with a potential for increasing the sustainability..

Cons:

Needs to be a sufficient excess of production at some times to provide energy for pumping. This energy is greater than the energy returned from storage because of losses.

The amount of storage may be limited compared to the need.

The flow down stream may be limited compared to the need. Too much demand can lead to flooding.

Environmental issues concerning dams and rivers.

Generally speaking many countries have insufficient storage to provide a large proportion of peak demand. The economics and other reasons for using pumped storage need to be analysed for the situations.

DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE PROS AND CONS FOR COAL ENERGY WIND ENERGY AND PUMPED STORAGE ENERGY?

Also could anybody provide me with a detailed conclusion as to which of these ENERGY sources would be best to supply England's electricity needs comparing all 3 to each other weighing up the PROSANDCONS.I will give best answer to most detailed AND helpful answer.Thanx in advance

WINDMILL FARMS ANSWERS:

Coal creates pollution, Sulphor dioxide and other environmental damages. Wind energy is clean. Pumped storage energy? Is it tidal or Hydro electric? Both are enviro-friendly. England's energy needs will be met using a combination of every thing for the next 100 yrs
